🧊 Physical
- • The Ice Trick: Hold an ice cube in your hand until it melts. The intense cold forces your brain back to your body.
- • Feet on Floor: Dig your heels into the ground and notice the solid connection.
🧩 Mental
- • Category Game: Name all the "Blue" items you can see, or all types of dogs.
- • Backward Counting: Count back from 100 by 7s (100, 93, 86...). This forces the logical brain back online.
☁️ Soothing
- • Self-Statement: Repeat: "I am safe right now. This feeling will pass. I am in my room."
- • Savor an Image: Think of a place where you feel perfectly at peace and describe it in detail.
Why Grounding Works
When you are triggered, your brain's "emotional center" (the Amygdala) takes over, and your "logical center" (the Prefrontal Cortex) shuts down.
By forcing yourself to focus on external sensory details, you are manually switching the power back to your logical brain. It tells your nervous system: "The threat is not here. I am in the present."
